Kindergarten Teaching

Working with local four- and five-year-olds from Ubud is a great way to go behind the scenes of Balinese culture. Just by interacting with the children, playing games and teaching them tidbits of English, you’ll learn a great deal about Balinese family life and values. Working with kids is one of the most authentic cultural experiences you’ll ever have.

Of course, it’s not all unbridled fun. Children this age have lots of energy, and they have plenty to learn in terms of sharing, playing fair and developing friendships. With that in mind, you’ll have your work cut out for you. The kindergarten volunteer project in Bali is exhausting—but it’s completely worth it.

Volunteers are expected to keep the following goals in mind:

  • Teach basic English phrases and greetings
  • Foster an enthusiasm for school through a positive (and fun) environment
  • Instill a passion for lifelong learning

As with kindergartens all of over the world, the atmosphere is informal. You’ll engage in a lot more playing than outright teaching. However, it’s the volunteer’s responsibility to look for ways to rein in that enthusiasm and create teachable moments.

This project has the potential to change lives. Many of the children at the kindergarten come from impoverished communities, and the attitudes and English-speaking skills they begin developing at this stage can dramatically affect their futures. You’ll also be one of the first foreigners that they’ve ever met, so the interactions you have with them during these developmental years are extremely significant. They can even be life-changing.

Volunteer Qualifications

The minimum age requirement for volunteers in this project is 18. No formal teaching qualifications are required to teach English at a Balinese Kindergarten. We do, however, ask for our volunteers to be fluent in both written and spoken English and have plenty of enthusiasm, initiative and patience.
